Susan Handwerker has FREE kiln shelves

I have a stack of 21" round kiln shelves I no longer use.  Most of them need to have glaze drips ground down, but they are otherwise quite serviceable.  I also have some half shelves. I will happily give them to whoever comes first.

MTA Arts has a deadline coming up!

Marsha wanted you all to know:

Heads up, a friend just tipped me off to this... deadline is Sept 30.  GREAT opportunity for a number of us! (No prior installation experience necessary!)

MTA Arts & Design seeks images of artists’ previous work to review in consideration for new Percent for Art projects to be fabricated in durable materials to be determined, such as porcelain enamel, glass, or mosaic. An approved fabricator will translate the final artwork design into the identified medium, therefore an artist’s prior experience, or lack thereof, with these materials will not be taken into consideration when reviewing images.
The budget for design and fabrication of the artwork for each subway station is approximately $150,000, including an artist fee of up to 20% of the final art project cost. As part of this fee, the selected artist will be required to submit a budget, produce completed designs, select a fabricator and oversee the fabrication and installation of the artwork, with project management by MTA Arts & Design.
For more info and list of specific subway locations:
https://mtaarts.submittable.com/submit

Cheers,
Spring

Empire State Dairy tile murals in Brooklyn, NY

Many of you know about the Empire State Dairy tile murals  in Brooklyn, NY. After seventeen years of trying to get the City to Landmark the dairy building, the City has decided to hear arguments for landmarking in July, because the City is now allowing developers to gain easements in Brooklyn's East New York area. This may be the only time we will have to influence this decision. (The building owner opposes landmark status.)

The Friends of Terra Cotta and Susan Tunick and I are asking individuals and organizations who are interested in the preservation of historic architectural ceramics to distribute and send a postcard to the Commissioner of the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission asking the LPC to landmark the Empire State Dairy building and its tile murals (made by the American Encaustic Tiling Company, and probably designed by Leon Solon, in 1912/13).

We have packages of pre-printed postcards, like the one below, which we will send to anyone, or any organization, who will distribute them, sign them and mail them to the LPC. Just send me your mailing address and the number of postcards you can use.

Please let me know if you can help us, and how many postcards you think you can use. (A letter from your organization to the LPC would help even more, but we would like individuals to send postcards also.)

If you wish to know more about these murals, go to these websites:

http://www.brownstoner.com/blog/2016/03/east-new-york-brooklyn-empire-state-dairy-tiles/?ic_source=icma

and

http://tilesinnewyork.blogspot.com/2016/03/wall-murals-in-brooklyn-mini-survey.html (scroll down almost to the end of the article)

Thank you one and all!

Upcoming Class: Plaster Model and Mold Making for Ceramics

Dear Brooklyn Potters,

I am preparing a workshop in my Red Hook studio for the next two weeks.
The Screwball Ceramic Group requested this workshop since I had a studio at TI Art Studios.
There are 4 people from the studio, but 2-3 additional people could participate. We thought to start on a Saturday afternoon, 3-4 hours, sometimes from middle of March (the 19th).

Please let me know if anyone is interested in 3-4 or more workshop sessions to learn about plaster model and mold making for slip-casting or use for press molds to open up new possibilities for their works.

Plaster Model and Mold Making for Ceramics
"Sylvia Nagy has great technical training in this area and would be interested in conducting a program related to slip casting or prototype fabrication in plaster. "-Judith

I have taught for 9 years Mold and Model Making in Plaster at Parsons School of Design. I have an MFA in silicate industrial design and art (glass, porcelain, ceramic).
I have created many design prototypes for companies to manufacture in the ceramic industry.
My clients include: Perry Ellis, Donna Karan, Cannon, Ceramic Supply NJ, Bed Bath & Beyond, Sakura, Ambrosia Glass Factory.  I also collaborate with artists, Rober Gober for example, to make press molds in plaster and complete life size ceramic-chairs for exhibition.

I could teach three-four or more sessions depending on the level of interest.

Prospective Potters, what area you would like to explore?

Please consider and answer the following questions:

1. Why are you interested in working in plaster?
2. What purpose do you want to work in plaster?  To create figurative sculpture, object, slip-casting etc?
3. What do you want to achieve?
4. What day and time would be the best for taking the 3-4 hour class?
5. Please send an image about your work sample.
6. Prepare one object, about 6 x 4 inches.

Please feel free to contact me via my email listed below.
sylvianagyceramic@hotmail.com

This would help me plan a program according to specific needs.
