BPG MEETING SUNDAY/ OCT 6th @ BWAC

The next Brooklyn Potters meeting will be on Sunday, October 6 at a different venue.  In order for everyone to see the ceramics show, we arranged for the meeting to take place at BWAC.  I am attaching another copy of the invitation so everyone has access to the website for directions, etc.  I would encourage people to arrive by 5:00 in order to see the whole show before it closes at 6:00.  We will have our potluck as usual and have use of the BWAC cafe complete with microwave, sink and refrigerators. We will be able to view the Art in Clay show at our leisure after the galleries officially close, but will probably not have access to the other parts of the gallery after 6:00 pm.
We will meet as usual and discuss the show, etc. Susan Handwerker and Renee Murray both have work in the show, as do Tony Moore, Peter Barnett, and many other fine local ceramic artists.

Rene Is in 2 shows

Dear fellow potters,

I just wanted to tell you about two shows that I am participating in at the present time:

— I am in a group show at BWAC--down in Red Hook--right near Fairways.   I have a larger space than usual and I have set up 5 figurative sculptures.  It looks like a mini solo show surrounded by a larger group show.  Come see.  It looks great!

— I am participating in a group show in HASTINGS, NEW YORK at a pop-up gallery.   The organizer and main exhibitor is Ruth Berelson.  She has just turned 90, and decided that a wonderful birthday present (to herself) would be a show of her latest (and possibly last) works.  She has chosen 10 of her students and 'mentorees' (that's me) to join her in this exhibit.  Ruth chose all of the work that she wanted each one of us to show in the gallery--so the pieces may not be the most recent ones, but rather--ones that Ruth loved and ones that she thought would all work well together.  Since most of these 10 exhibitors have shown in solo or group shows, the work is of very high caliber.  The show should be a delight! The OPENING is SUNDAY, OCT. 6th (1P.M.—5P.M.)  at the pop-up gallery--541  Warburton Ave.  Hastings, N.Y.  Hope to see you there!

best,
Rene

Ikebana class

 From Barbara Cahn
Hi - I've been speaking with a friend, Elizabeth Berry, who is a certified teacher of  Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) about the idea of doing an Ikebana demo with our group next spring.
I'm proposing it now to see if there is interest from the group.

Elizabeth has been practicing Ikebana for more than 30 years, and exhibiting her work in Ikebana shows all over the world. She has formal certification from two Ikebana schools in Japan.
This past spring she did a demo with a group of potters in Lorton VA, where people brought in their pots, and she created Ikebana arrangements in them.  She has sent me photos, which I can forward to Sabina to post on the blog.

She likes to see the pots before she buys the materials, so we would have to arrange that.

She is based in Virginia, but visits New York often to visit family. She is proposing the weekend of May 4 next spring, but we can choose another time if that's not good for people.

Health Care Survey

From Ed:

Message

Tue Aug 27, 2013 4:45 pm (PDT) . Posted by:

"Association of Teaching Artists"

The Future of Music Coalition, the Artists’ Health Insurance Resource Center and Fractured Atlas are conducting a survey of US-based artists about their access to health insurance. They are gathering data in order to be able to better inform artists of their care options under the Affordable Care Act. (More at: http://futureofmusic.org/article/research/artists-and-health-insurance-survey) Please help us get the word out and share this survey with your network of artists! This is a critical moment to capture baseline data from US artists about their access to health insurance – the last day to participate is this Saturday, Aug 31.
ARTISTS: do you have health insurance? If not, why not? Nonprofit artists advocacy groups are conducting an online survey from July 17 – Aug 31 to assess how many US-based artists have health insurance on the eve of the Affordable Care Act. These results will contribute to a body of research that aims to provide artists with accessible information about their care options.

Click here to participate in this brief survey:
http://www.research.net/s/artistsandhealthinsurance

All answers are anonymous and confidential, and the survey should take about 10 minutes to complete. We urge you to participate so we can really understand the health insurance needs and priorities of the artist community. Survey closes August 31.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Show

From Ellen Reznick

I saw a spectacular show today at The Stux Gallery in Chelsea at 530 W. 25th St.
The artist is Kathy Ruttenberg who sculpts in clay and combines human and animal forms to tell dream-like stories which are provocative and touching. Her mastery of the material and her color sense is impressive and beautiful. I thought of Viola Frey's work but Kathy has a unique vision which needs to be seen to be appreciated. The last day of the show is Saturday so try to see it ASAP.
